Whitetail Deer Hunting
I offer rifle and archery hunts during the rut! In my area of South Dakota, my clients get the oportunity to hunt whitetails and mule deer during the rut with rifles and archery equipment. This is a great advantage over other outfitters. Ask any of my previous clients about the number of deer and the quality of the deer they saw and decide if my operation is the kind of operation you would like to hunt with. I don't try to be everything to everybody but I focus on what I do best. I would be glad to give you a list of ALL of my hunters from the past season, successful and unsuccessful alike.
When researching a hunt, you should ask to speak with ALL of the clients who hunted the same time you are considering hunting the previous year. It is foolish to consider booking a hunt with an outfitter before you speak with hunters who have hunted the same time and place during the previous season. It is important to know ahead of time what you are getting for your money. About 30% of my current business is repeat business and each year repeat business grows. This is because I show my clients a great time. I am proud of the attention I give each client before, during, and after the hunt. Most importantly, DON'T CONSIDER BOOKING A HUNT WITH ANYONE THAT IS NOT WILLING TO GIVE YOU PHONE NUMBERS AND/OR EMAIL ADDRESSES OF ALL OF THEIR CLIENTS FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR.
The South Dakota deer tag costs are very reasonable. The cost savings is up to several hundred dollars less than some states. As you watch many of the deer hunting shows on The Outdoor Network and other sporting shows, you will notice that many of them are starting to hunt here in South Dakota. They are doing this due to the quantity of deer, the quality of deer, and the low hunting pressure on our deer. I have had Primos Game Calls filming out here a couple of times and they were very impressed with the number and QUALITY of the bucks they saw.
Our archery whitetail deer hunting is also outstanding. It is possibly one of the best kept secrets on the continent for the whitetail archer enthusiast. The quantity and quality of whitetails here have never been better. It is a great time to book a hunt with Jim River Guide Service to get in on a very impressive whitetail hunt.
The reason for the whitetail success is habitat. The flood of '98 and an ongoing CRP program have resulted in thousands of acres of habitat for not only whitetails and pheasants, but also mule deer, predators, waterfowl, doves, grouse, and partridge. We also make regular sightings of bald and golden eagles.
I offer guided archery-only hunts on about 15,000 acres of private ground. I also offer guided rifle hunts on thousands of acres of private land. These hunts are offered in very small numbers and sell out early. You will find my conservation strategies provide hunting with great opportunities and great trophies, year after year. It is realistic to expect chances at buck deer every day. Bucks with PY/BC scores of 120-140, although we see bigger bucks regularly, would be a reasonable expectation on an archery hunt. Rifle hunters should expect a little better. Our mule deer can get up to 170-180 Boone & Crockett.
There is approximately 40% river bottom land, 40% cropland, and 20% pasture which provides a great variety of hunting options. Archery hunters can stand hunt whitetails in the river bottom or bordering crop lands or still hunt whitetails or mule deer in the eastern hills of Clark County. There are permanent stands and several portable stands positioned in easy archery range of well used deer trails. We also utilize lures and scents that are manufactured locally by James Valley Scents. I have seen tremendous results with these products and highly recommend them. We'll position you based on deer activity, weather conditions and wind direction. Everything is taken into account to improve your chances for taking a deer. We also expect you to do your part. Practice at the range, patience, and the ability to sit perfectly still for long periods of time are essential aspects of archery deer hunting.
